Methodology Ledger & Disclosures (August 2026 Revision): Base calculations utilize regional index values. Local MiWay adult PRESTO base fare tracking set to $3.50 (cash valuation $4.50), monthly ledger configuration caps at $145. GO Transit line structures represent Metrolinx Lakeshore West matrix values. Cross-boundary discount parameters auto-apply through the Ontario One Fare framework logic matrix. Private motor vehicle metrics estimate standard fuel allocation alongside a fixed $0.12/km deprecation/preventative maintenance variable. Peripheral costs including vehicle registration insurance updates or toll route access are omitted.

Realized monthly commuting costs will vary based on individual driving habits, volatile market gas prices, specific vehicle maintenance histories, and unannounced transit tariff adjustments by regional operators. Comparing a Mississauga commute honestly

Drivers tend to compare a transit fare against the price of a tank of gas, which is the comparison that makes driving look cheap. The honest comparison puts the fare against every cost the car actually incurs, including the ones that are billed annually or never billed at all.

01 / The Fares

What MiWay and GO charge in 2026

The MiWay adult PRESTO fare is $3.50 following the January 2026 increase, and the monthly pass is $145 — which pays for itself at about 42 rides.

GO fares are distance-based rather than flat, so the station you start from matters more than the length of your working day. Cooksville to Union is $12.30 return; other Mississauga stations differ, and the GO commuter cost guide lists them all.

02 / One Fare

The transfer discount that changes the maths

Ontario’s One Fare program removed the double charge that used to apply when a trip crossed between MiWay, GO, TTC and the other regional systems. For a cross-boundary commute this materially changes which option wins.

It can also make a MiWay monthly pass redundant. If your commute is mainly by GO with a short local leg at each end, the pass may be buying you something One Fare already covers — the pass versus PRESTO + GO comparison works both cases through.

03 / The Car

Fuel is the smallest part of the number

Running a car in Mississauga costs at least $16,000 a year. Fuel is a visible but modest share of that; insurance, maintenance, parking and above all depreciation make up the rest, and none of them are paid at a pump where you notice them.

Mississauga insurance premiums also run above the Ontario average, and they vary by postal code more than by driving record. The car insurance breakdown covers where $300 to $600 a year is recoverable.

04 / What It Excludes

Time, reliability and the second car

This is a cost comparison, not a lifestyle one. It does not price the time difference between a 25-minute drive and a 55-minute transit trip, nor the reliability difference on a February morning.

The largest saving it cannot model is the household that drops from two cars to one. That single decision is worth more than every fare optimisation on this page combined.

The Bottom Line

For a solo commuter into Toronto, transit almost always wins on cost once depreciation and insurance are counted — the question worth testing is whether your household still needs its second car.

Sources & assumptions

  • MiWay — 2026 fare schedule (adult PRESTO $3.50, monthly pass $145)
  • Metrolinx / GO Transit — distance-based fare table; Ontario One Fare program
  • Car ownership costs: Mississauga Wallet analysis, August 2026
  • TTC — adult PRESTO fare $3.30; monthly fare capping, free after 47 paid trips in a calendar month (read 20 September 2026)
  • Driving costs assume a typical mid-size vehicle. Fuel, parking and insurance vary widely by vehicle, driver and workplace.
  • Correction · Corrected 20 September 2026. The Toronto option priced TTC travel at a $3.20 fare capped by a $153 adult monthly pass. The fare is $3.30, and the TTC discontinued its adult monthly pass on 31 August 2026, replacing it on 1 September with monthly fare capping: after 47 paid trips in a calendar month the rest of that month is free. Both the price and the mechanism were wrong, and the tool now models the cap. No MiWay, GO or driving figure changed.
